JOHN McWHORTER: You know, it’s interesting, the little things that would make you stand out in certain places and in certain times. And it’s one thing to have Philadelphia vowels and thinking about this got me thinking about New York, as one does, and the sorts of things that might have made you stand out in, say, 1930 if you didn’t say them the way everybody else did.
